What Does an Adjuster do?

I never had a claim before and the insurance adjuster is coming today. What exactly does an adjuster do and what should I expect?
There are two types of adjusters. The first is an independent, licensed professional hired by your insurance company to investigate your claim. Independent adjusters typically specialize in a certain type of loss, for example, business income, liability, fire, and have the expertise in settling those claims. The other type of adjusters work for the insurance company and are called staff adjusters.
The adjuster’s job is simply to gather the facts about your claim and report them to the insurance company. The adjuster does not decide whether or not your claim should be paid although they will make recommendations to the insurance company. Your insurance company will then decide whether or not your loss is covered under your insurance policy and if it is, will pay the claim.
So whether your claim is to be settled by an independent adjuster or a staff adjuster doesn’t make much difference. Your job is to give them the facts and information they ask for and the insurance company will decide how much is to be paid.
